Best Independent Gift Shops in Toronto: Queen East vs. Queen West
Compare independent gift shops on Queen East and Queen West, from The Flamingo and Cookery to Outer Layer and TYPE Books, with tips on which street suits which gift.
With the holidays approaching, it is worth knowing where independent gift shops cluster. Two stretches of Queen Street dominate the local conversation: the Leslieville end of Queen East and the Queen West and Ossington corridor. Drawing on Toronto Life, BlogTO and Streets of Toronto roundups, here is how they compare and how to decide where to shop.
Queen East: quirky, kitchen and gourmet
Toronto Life's February 2025 local-gems list (a sponsored piece created for American Express) groups several Queen Street East shops. The Flamingo, at 991 Queen St. E., is a gift shop for quirky apparel, drinkware, collectibles, stickers, comics and graphic novels. Cookery, at 1170 Queen St. E., sells cookware and small appliances and also runs cooking classes and knife sharpening. The Side Kitchen, at 1093 Queen St. E., focuses on gourmet gifts such as sauces, preserves and prepared dishes. For a gift run that doubles as a food-lover's errand, this stretch is hard to beat.
Queen West: stationery, books and design
On the west side, Streets of Toronto's roundup of Queen West shops names Outer Layer, a quirky gift shop selling greeting cards (many by local artists), stationery, candles and socks. BlogTO's Queen West holiday gift guide adds Drake General Store for playful finds and stocking stuffers, TYPE Books for bestsellers, special editions, children's books and local zines, The Paper Place for stationery, wrapping paper, ribbon, cards, crafts and jigsaw puzzles, and Coal Miner's Daughter for Canadian-made clothing, jewelry and accessories. Hunting for a book, a card and wrapping in one walk is the strength of this side of town.
The Ossington extras
Toronto Life also lists I Miss You Man at 63-E Ossington Ave., a resale shop for designer-label menswear, which suits shoppers buying for someone who prefers secondhand finds. Streets of Toronto's list also includes Kops Records for vinyl, with 45s, new releases and rare vintage records.
Head to head
Queen East is the stronger choice if your recipient loves cooking, comics or edible gifts, and it is more compact if you park in Leslieville. Queen West is stronger for paper goods, books and giftable curiosities, and is easier to combine with a coffee crawl or a gallery stop. Neither is a one-stop shop, so decide by the recipient first.
How to choose
Start with the person, not the street. Cook: Cookery or The Side Kitchen. Reader: TYPE Books. Collector or kid-at-heart: The Flamingo. Stocking stuffers and cards: Outer Layer, Drake General Store or The Paper Place. Music fan: Kops Records. Check each shop's hours and holiday schedule before you go, since small independents often change hours in December, and note that some listings in these guides are sponsored, so treat them as starting points rather than rankings.
